The Experience AI Challenge

A free challenge that helps young people make projects with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.

Submissions open on 08 January 2024. Register your interest

What’s involved?

Young people will learn how to design machine learning algorithms that classify different data types including audio, text, and images, then use these algorithms to create their own project.

There are three stages:

  • Planning the best machine learning model for projects.
  • Coming up with an idea and making projects using our step-by-step guide.
  • Submitting projects online. We’ll review each project and share ideas for improvement.

Why take part?

Experience AI is a chance for young people’s imaginations to run wild! Building a machine learning model teaches many skills beyond coding, including learning about ethics, computational thinking and design, and it develops a broader understanding of the influence of AI on society.

You can download and use the challenge resources from anywhere in the world. You don’t need any previous computing experience to run the challenge — it’s for AI beginners.

Project submission is only open to educators and young people (up to age 18) who live in the UK. All submitted projects will receive expert feedback from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

Challenge overview

Explore Resources

  • Sign up or log in to your Raspberry Pi Foundation account to access the free resources and submission code.

Build and create

  • Share the challenge resources with your young people. The challenge has three stages, which should cover around 5 hours of activities.
  • Set up your young people on Machine Learning for Kids and Scratch.
  • Young people will craft a new machine learning model using the Machine Learning for Kids platform and code a Scratch application. How they apply these programmes to their project is up to them – we are excited to see their creations!

Project submission (UK only)

  • Project submission is only open to educators and young people (up to age 18) who live in the UK.
  • Young people submit their projects using our online form. They’ll need your submission code to do this.
  • Every project will be reviewed and receive expert feedback from the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
  • Each project will also receive a certificate of achievement, and outstanding projects will be selected as our experts' favourites.
